You’ve Been Writing Your New Year Resolution Wrongly! If You Want To Be Successful This Coming Year, Try Focusing These 10 Practical Ways Instead

“People focus on goals for New Year Resolution but great leaders focus on growth instead.” That was a simple statement from my mentor which made me re-evaluate my life this year. He added that when people focus solely on goals, they might achieve their goals but may not necessary grow to become better people. But when people focus on personal growth and the growth of others, they will definitely grow and their goals might be achieved at the same time.

So today, 31st of December 2016, since I have the privilege to sit down and redo my new year resolution, I will share with you some of the practical ways I will focus, change and do (starting tomorrow) that shall lead me to my success in my upcoming years!

1. Rise Early

This is the first practical thing I shall do tomorrow. It’s not that I wake up late normally but I think I can do better (normally I wake up at 7.30am but I aim to wake up at 6am during the weekdays this year). Waking up early gives me more time to do more things, enhances my productivity and most importantly, this is the very first step towards my discipline journey. “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines practiced every day”.

2. Don’t Check On Phone First Thing In The Morning

This is one example of a bad habit which I will definitely change this year. Looking at my phone immediately can hijack my morning routine. I would usually spend around 30-45 minutes on my bed looking through my social media and news right after I woke up. Not only my precious time was wasted but when I came across some bad news sometimes, it affected my mood the whole day.

3. Quiet Time / Meditate

The most important reasons why I want to wake up earlier before anyone else does is to have my own quiet time. I believe in the power of quiet time. More than just spiritual reasons, quiet time helps the body relax and may lower blood pressure and heart rate. It allows the mind to find creativity and joy. Even ten minutes a day is enough. There are many ways to do your quiet time. You can pray, meditate, reflect, visualize or even just do simple breathing. If you haven’t tried it before, I want to challenge you to do this first thing in the morning you wake up. You can thank me later.

4. Healthy Living


I’m proud to say that I have slight visible abs now, thanks to my new year resolution in 2013 which keeps my regular gym session going till today, but healthy living is more than just having good body, it’s also about having good mental and emotional health. Few things on my health habits which I shall improve this year include going to bed early (before 11pm), try new exercise instead of going to gym (would love to learn Tai Chi, appreciate if anyone can suggest a good place to learn in Jakarta!) and develop healthy eating habits. 5. Learning New Skill / Personal Development

Learning new skill and attending personal-development courses are arguably some of the most important activities you can do this year. Rather than perceiving this as a selfish act, investing in yourself to become a better person benefits those around you, as well as those in your community and workplace making you more open minded. This year I had learn how to do simple video editing and logo animation and helped few people to produce some beautiful videos, what about you? Can’t think of anything to learn? 6. Step Out of Comfort Zone

My focus in this new year is about personal growth and growth cannot happen in comfort zone. But most people are often afraid to take that first step. In fact, comfort zones are not really about comfort, they are about fear. Break the chains of fear to get outside and learn to enjoy the process of taking risks and growing in the process. One of the specific things which I will do this new year to get out of my comfort zone is to scale up my business. Many things I fear about scaling up my business, that include meeting more people (yes, I’m an introvert), losing control over my business (yes, I’m a perfectionist), losing my personal space, more pressure, etc. But since I’m committed to my personal growth, I shall get out! What about you?

7. Focus on Building Positive Relationship


These are my struggle as an introvert – I can be very awkward when I’m in a networking session, I don’t enjoy small talks, and I hardly make new friends. However, that should not be the excuse if I am focusing on personal growth. Whether I am introvert or extrovert, making effort to build good relationship with new people, mentors, existing customers, vendors and team members should be the ultimate goal in business. My mentor once mentioned, “If you focus on the goals too much, you will make use of your team members. Try focusing on the growth of your team members and they will help you achieve the goals!”. 8. Learn To Respond, Not React


Although this year has been a great year for my company, I admit that I have offended a few potential clients and vendors due to my harsh reaction towards their behaviour. Whether people treat us are right or wrong, the truth is, we often react without thinking. It’s a gut reaction, often based on fear and insecurities, and it’s not the most rational or appropriate way to act. Responding, on the other hand, is taking the situation in, and deciding the best course of action based on values such as reason, compassion, cooperation, etc.

So I will learn to remind myself this new year to PAUSE when unpleasant things happen. Don’t have to act immediately, then let the internal emotion go away. Sometimes that takes a few seconds, other times it means we should remove ourselves politely from the situation and let ourselves cool down before we respond. Are you with me?

9. Read More Books

Read More Books

Book reading has always been on my top priorities in my life. Whether I’m feeling stuck in life or relaxing on a holiday, books are my best companion. I often find inspiration and ideas through reading and sometimes, a good book would make me stop and wonder about my life’s purpose. If you’re not a consistent reader yet, I would highly encourage you to begin today. Start with reading a simple book, fiction or non-fiction, that interests you the most and let the magical journey begin! And sometimes, the best mentor is only a book away.

10. Travel Often

I didn’t have much chance to travel to new places this year and I’m aiming to make it happen in this coming new year. There are many things you can’t learn in a school. Things like independence, patience, understanding, appreciation, cultural immersion, getting out of your comfort zone, budgeting, etc. There’s so much you can learn from travelling that you simply won’t get elsewhere. Travel is not necessarily expensive especially when you do your research beforehand. Indonesia, for example, has many great places for you to visit.
